Kenya – Amboseli, Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru

The land of all origins.. Africa still rocks the cradle of life. From the biggest land mammal to the smallest finds a place for itself. The drama of life is played everyday in the vast, beautiful, mysterious continent.

I was lucky to visit Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and the vast plains of Masai Mara in Dec 2017. Amboseli is famous for its free roaming herds of elephants under the roof of Africa, Kilamanjaro. Big bulls were a treat to watch and photograph as they move in search of water, food and potential females to mate. Apart from the elephants, it is also home for lot of other species of life.

Masai Mara – The infinite plains

The Masai Mara National reserve is an absolute photographer’s paradise. For someone going for the first time, it is very difficult to control pressing the shutter. Land of the big 5, we were lucky to spot all of them in a span of 2 days. The landscape is breathtaking with its magical sky in the late evenings – having a wide angle lens was very handy indeed.

Lake Nakuru

A huge salt lake with amazing landscape. Home of the white rhino this place also has a wide variety of antelopes along with Giraffe, Zebras and Cape Buffalos. We also spotted couple of lions inside a bush.

The gear: My primary gear was the Nikon D500 + 400mm f2.8. I also used the 2x teleconverter III liberally to get some closeup images (the performance is simply awesome with 400mm f2.8). The second set was Nikon D800 + 70-200mm VR II – I used  this to get a wide angle perspective of the elephants. The other very useful lens was the Nikon 24-120mm vr for covering landscapes.
